The Language of my Lake

      Big Bear, California

        September 2000

by Mary Langer Thompson

Ducks and herons and

bass and boats

are the nouns

performing the action

on my lake,

all lined up like

words in a sentence

swimming, diving, sailing

into streams of consciousness

all unafraid of

harsh endings

to come.

Sitting, slowly sipping

twilight with a twist

under fluttering birch leaves

I, the pronoun,

contemplate

a harvest moon.
