Combinations
by Shoshauna Shy

Decades later my fingers
still remember the glide

pass zero to 13

in the school corridor
hastening to retrieve
sack-lunch-plus-books
and get to the stairs
when Greg Grunig
came by

counter-clockwise 23

to that damp winter day
I opened a door to an
almond-eyed man
who'd become my husband

quick twist to 50

and our youngest
leaves home, the
mortgage is paid off,
our anniversary silvers.
