Christine’s World
(for my daughter)
by Gabriela Anaya Valdepeña

Eyes of malachite. Laugh of wine. She
Has made me over, filled my life with
Ducks and humor; carpet skiing with my crutches.

Wind oppresses, trees decide
Too much. The sea speaks nothing. The sky
Tastes bitter. But she is leopard lily;

She is colorless. She is flight and land. She is an earth
God has yet to shape. I shall stand and fall
A thousand times in Christine’s world.
