Raspberries
by Phibby Venable

In early March you said the berries seemed
to thrive much better than they had last year.
Now, that is something good! is what you said.
I did not love raspberries as you did.

But I did love the way you cared for things.
And had enthusiasm for the small.
And listened closely in a serious stance.
You always had a word of good intent.

By middle March your heart had hit a pause.
You were so tired and your eyes were so large.
You looked at me as if you meant to say
some scary thing, but then you changed your mind.

Oh, now I know, that dreadful, scary thing!
You did not see the raspberries in spring.
