Seascape
by Carol Aronoff

I was disappointed in the shells
I found on Ho'okena beach.
I expected more from sand
and ocean: corals, greens,
saffron, purple. Trumpet shapes
and stars, spirals in mother
of pearl. Instead, I see cowries
and moon snails in mottled
browns, or black and gray,
same as the seabirds and rocks
along this tropical shore.
Perhaps my sunglasses
bleached out the colors–
filters will do that. Or maybe,
my expectations were too high,
keeping me from seeing things
as they really are.
