For the Time Being
by Bruce Dethlefsen

we called it the lake
before we knew it was called trout lake
before it was called otukamamoan
before it was called the lake
before it was called the water
before it was called nothing at all

it was blue and green
in spring and summer
autumns gray and copper
blue and white again in winter

it lived and died
for at least ten thousand
what do you call them
years
