We Spoke of Many Things
by Sharmagne Leland-St. John

we spoke of many things
we did not speak of the weather
yet it was all around us
and the wind sang old songs

his hair was white
as snow drifts
flowing
with his back to the window
he did not see
the humming bird
whose wings were beating
whose heart was pounding

we spoke of many things
we spoke of loss and grieving
of those long gone or leaving
we spoke of pain
and what we had gained
in growing

our voices low
and soothing

our secrets shared
as souls were bared
in fragmented thoughts
like dreaming
and I see
the journey is the element
which composes
the man worth knowing
