Sanctioned To Belong
by Gabriela Anaya Valdepeņa

It went unwritten, but once upon a time before
Once upon a time, you sanctioned me to belong

To the garden, to the sphere of unnecessary beauty.
You created things I had the job of naming.

But I taxed your memory, for I was once
A Mayan and believed a name should grow.

You expelled me to a field of varying weeds--
I won't trouble you with introductions, Love--

I have been here a long time
