Bound to Go On
by David Matthews

It is a heavy weight
We lay on beauty
To see us through night
That does not pass away.
It is a heavy weight we lay
On an espresso cup,
A blue vase with paper flowers,
Wind that blows off the Pacific
Way up north where the days grow short
As summer ends,
A riot of light against a dark
More dark with each thought
That fails to touch bottom.
It is a heavy weight
We lay on our searching
For a wash of color
To rainbow all that boundless sky
In the café cubano eyes
Of a young woman with no papers,
No documentation,
Not so much as the name of a stranger
To cry out in the blind street . . .
Bound to go on.
