As Darkness Falls
by Deborah Russell

Without a dream
or nightmare
life continues to drip
across your face
where I am going
and where I have been
is irrelevant
In my right eye,
before the setting
of this round, red sun,
there is a vision…
of warmth and sanity …
As darkness falls
upon your eyes
particles of my pride
shift and move,
quietly, they dust the earth
I watch small,
white specks
cover my footsteps
as if I were never
here, nor there -
a living poem
Soon,  I recognize,
in your dark planet,
I’ve become
a dying star…
indistinguishable,
like a silent vowel
