Just Last Week
by Sharmagne Leland-St.John

Oh God Leslie!
it never occurred to me
that you might be in the city..
just last week
I left you in the country
with green farms
stretching as far
as the naked eye could see
and glimmer glass lakes
with ducks and wild geese
floating upon
their own reflections
you were framed
by blue skies
not enveloped
in a blackish gray
pungent, smoky haze
in this war zone
surrounded by
the stench of death
in a tangled mass of steel
in that concrete jungle.
I wish I were there
to wrap my arms
around you..
to make this horror
seem to disappear
but you are there
and I am here
