Anticipation
by Wilda Morris

Eagerly I read, anxious to know
who approaches through early morning fog
as Arthur Dimmesdale stands on the scaffold
with Hester Prynne and little Pearl
What has Brother Cadfael pried
from clenched fingers of the corpse?
Will Scout and Jem get home alive
after Bob Ewell attacks them
as they walk home on a dark night?
Where was the missing child's shoe found?
Before I turn another page, the phone
rings, someone knocks on the door,
a child falls and comes crying
or the dryer signals completion of the cycle.
Shirts must be hung.
