Desert Songs
by Alexandria Economou

I traveled to the desert

To hear forgotten songs
Long buried in the sand

Beneath the Arizona sun.
One small cloud
White chalk scribbled in the azure sky
Above the long slow train from Mexico
Crossing the bridge over the sun dried river
Drumming a weary sound.
Black desert horses
Wild hearted sages
Still in the afternoon glare
Lifted their heads toward distant winds
That chanted forgotten words.
Sands dancing for the mountains
Like the shaman's circle
Swirls lifting from the ground
Surrounding us
Dusting us to one color
I heard the songs in the dancing sand
As I walked with desert horses.
