Sammy's Artist's Statement

I have always been interested in the effects of light and shadow on the patterns of the land, and the beauty and tranquillity of the central and southern Kentucky landscape is very attractive to me as a painting subject. My work has been shown in a number of solo and group shows, and is in both private and public collections.

In addition to landscape paintings, I have made a series of hand-watercolored prints of places in Kentucky and England. Starting with my pen-and-ink drawings, a black-and-white print is made and each one is watercolored. I started doing this when I needed to make more money to help my daughter with art school expenses. They sold really well, so I kept it up, and finally had about three dozen different buildings and scenes available.

I am a native of south-central Kentucky, long-time artist and former galleryowner. and have studied at the University of Kentucky, Cincinnati Academy of Art, and at workshops with Neil DiTeresa and Sheldon Tapley. While studyingat the Cincinnati Academy I found that I didn't like working with oils. I tried pastel, and never looked back.
