Rain

Tonight the rain
is beautiful. Five words
that are no metaphor for
wetness mirroring melancholy;
it is not like rain is like anything else
tonight. It is a rain that fills me with ease,
a pleasing presence on tarmac and concrete;
washing light the way a kiss polishes a moment
of love, like a bottle of wine before it is closed
with a cork, imagines the cork screw releasing its
bouquet. The rain is beautiful tonight and as my umbrella
saves me from becoming wet, my imagination saves me from
becoming bored. Rain is never bored. It falls and gathers dryness,
persuading it to disappear, the way a poem can trick silence into
