Second Place
by Tina Hacker

Why was Adam first?
Eve would bear
the children. Shouldn't she
have been given the honor?
She wouldn't have slept through
Adam's birth either,
would have stayed wide awake,
curious to see creation.
Maybe Adam grumbled so much
—scars and soreness and all—
that it just seemed better
for women to do the birthing.
If Eve appeared first, she might not
have eaten from the Tree of Knowledge,
might have felt totally secure
in the scheme of the universe.
Then we'd still be in the Garden
munching apples, riding lions
and telling tales of an Eden
that never had a chance
because Adam came first.
