Buds on Broken Branches
by Jim Teeters

The ice storm that blasted us this winter
tore off branches and twisted down the trees
but the wonder of it all this spring
are buds on broken branches that I see

My love once proudly wrote and sang her songs
before the storm inside her brought her low
the burden she now bears keeps her striving
for buds on broken branches that might grow

The buds on broken branches puzzle me
it could be they have a message to give
a bright yet desperate phenomenon
like us they're screaming out, "I want to live!"

I reach out like buds on broken branches
to find the answer shining in the sun
