The Fabulist’s Pen
by Margarita Engle
Weightless things
do not crave wings.
Feathers are needed
by the heaviness
of birds.
Listen to the struggle
of a swan
rising from water
or a beetle
abandoning earth.
Weightless spirits float
at the mercy
of wind
while solid creatures
must propel ourselves
with effort
each word
a flight
of choice.
