Sunset Park
by Kate Magill

Smell of wild piss
under the blistering sun
mixes with sagebrush:
a sinewy coyote
trotting just ahead of us,

seemingly heedless
of the throbbing traffic hum.
Too nervous to growl,
my dog‐
      all stiffened bristle,
rasping‐
      pulls hard at his leash.
