Mortgaged
by David D. Horowitz

He reads of new disease, old war, and lost
Perspective. Young, he craved a fenced-in yard,
Two-car garage, and weekend boat to guard
And keep. That novel, though, he thought he'd write
By now insists on teasing him at night.
He loves his house, a hive for family
And friends, and yet responsibility
Strains leisure, stifles risk, restrains the dare.
That novel! He drives daughter here and there,
Keeps mortgage paid. Just now he learns its cost.
