For Artemis
by Christopher Ingham

There comes a time when love comes unbidden,
Unwelcome, out of time for you, for me.
It is as if the planets have shifted
Out of alignment, leaving us circling
Forever in separate orbits,
Like the two moons of Mars, never to touch.
We are dancers in a celestial
Masquerade, our love eternally masked,
Hidden from a rigid cosmic order
That will never allow deviation.

So you, who are named after Artemis,
Must remain a reflection of love's light,
And I must stand eternally alone,
Bathed in the cold white light of my regret.
