Chambers Creek
by Carl "Papa" Palmer

gliding parallel in tandem
young mallard and mate
eyes wide laughing loud

arrive in sliding splashes
noisily shake off excitement
wake slumbered silence

waves encircle widen wane
diminish to prior smoothness
before reaching shore where

poised at water's edge a lone
blue heron like the vigilant
school librarian keeps watch
