The Waves
by L.B. Williams

Waves break
into polished whalebone
         against a darkness
when I was one
with a stalk
         in a field
                  among friends.

Blue tassels unravel
         across a pale grey sky.
         No one sees us
for what we are,
         uncombed starfish
         asleep
                  on the ocean floor.
