Raspberry Morning
by Gail Hamilton

early light, quiet coolness,
white curtains, slightly breathing
somewhere between dream and new day
the soft sound
ping, ping as first berries
meet the bottom of metal buckets
then silence as they make a bed
for others.

only a straw hat moving
down dark green rows
hands moving quickly, searching
out the ripe, ready red.
few escape her knowing hand.

summer morning ritual
planning time and meditation
hours accomplished before
stretching, yawning, reluctant
children even leave their beds.
