Summer Turns
by George Held

After weeks of swelter
heat breaks
humidity dips

the breeze stiffens
with sea scent
Roadsides brim

with Queen Anne’s lace
and goldenrod
Monarchs arrive

Apples turn
from toys
into serious fruit

The sun’s slant
heightens color
deepens shade

and I feel the pang
the turn
toward fall can bring

Summer Turns is in George's chapbook GROUNDED, which is listed at www.finishinglinepress.com, under BOOKSTORE, and also at Amazon.com.
