Kamakura
by Deborah Russell

he said
in Kamakura
we should listen
above the bridge -
where laughter drizzles
below
he said
we should watch
red umbrellas move
mysteriously through the air
some, seem to weave
about like poppies.
he said
in Kamakura, the quiet is different.
near the lotus pond
the stillness is unequal, deeper.
he said,
in Kamakura
silence is sacred
if you listen
you will hear it's blades
reach and stretch
to the end of the temple walk,
let's not take the bridge
but deliberately walk
on this narrow path
a concise path -
he said all this
in a voice so rich
it cut the thickness
of my breath
