I Heard It Snow
by E.K. Cooper

My friend Rick and I traveled
to Donner Pass California
one afternoon to see
the newly fallen snow.

We arrived and pulled off I-80
next to a stream with an icy flow.

Throwing snowballs,
Rick and I waged a snowy battle.
We called a truce as a heavy snowfall set in.

We stood in the falling snow like brothers;
happy to witness Mother Nature's
gorgeous snowflake show.

It was then we heard a gentle crunching sound.
As we listened silently we realized we could hear it snowing!

I gave a heartfelt thank you
to Mother Nature for sharing the knowing.

As we drove back to the warmth of home,
this Pomo man's spirit smiled with the knowledge
that he heard the soft voice of the falling snow.
