Gong Xi Fa Cai

by Sharmagne Leland-St. John

In beauty
she stands
beneath
the Chinese Elm
on New Year's day,
pausing
on her way
to meet her lover
she contemplates
the cranes,
a flurry
of feathers
and wings
as they
lift off
over
rice paddies
adjacent
to the alley
of ancient elms.
