Mass
by Kevyn Clark

Mozart
Requiem Mass,
how appropriate at 3 am
during another fit of drinking
and drugs.
Not that death
would accomplish anything.
It’s just a whim.
Still,
appropriate.

I saw the movie
Amadeus
several times.
I was moved.
Was he really
writing his own mass?
Again,
how appropriate.
A whim,
no, perhaps
passion.

My brother
killed himself
without writing a mass.
My sister tried
and failed.
Not enough drinking
I guess.
No requiem mass
for her.

3:20 am
and the music
fills my head.
The cadence,
the measures,
the familiar
notes pounding
on my temples
let me in.
this is for you.

Oh God,
the sweet harmony
dressed in alcohol
and opiates
strumming through
these tired
and aching veins
like weary streets,
closed,
longing for detour.

Over and over
the intricate patterns
play,
my hands sway
conducting,
head bowed
I write my own mass
because I cannot
stop trying to be
appropriate
amen.
