Later That Night
by J. J. Steinfeld

He might ask if she'd ever lied during a prayer.
He might ask if she'd forgotten or forsaken love.
He might ask if she'd sought escape in deception.
He might ask if she'd sleep with a vagabond…

More likely, he'll pass her on the street
without a word or even a half-smile
but later that night, perhaps,
after he has run out of words and excuses,
they will have a lovely conversation
and one of them will fall in love.

"Later That Night," was first published in the chapbook Open Heart 2, Anthology of Canadian Poetry
(Selected by John B. Lee, Beret Days Press, 2008).
