This Morning I Stayed in Bed (for Holley)
by Michael Graves

This morning I stayed
in bed,
with you.

I kissed your face
and smelled your hair;

and felt your warmth
in a way that
I had not, felt
before.

This morning I stayed,
and a different future opened
and my eyes opened,
and I saw a place that
I had never been.

I let the world go by.

This morning I stayed,

promises
to others,
I left strewn
across the bedroom floor,

to pick up
at another
time.

This morning I stayed, and
watched you
breathe
and with each
breath
the outside world
felt farther
and further
away,

We watched the leaves,
we fed the cat
and every little thing
was right.

Because this morning I stayed,
with you.
