My Soul To Keep
by Sharmagne Leland-St. John

I have been yours
from the moment
I first heard your
ever so slightly
accented
southern voice
as I listened to your
lyric tale unfold
I have been yours
from the moment
your hazel eyes
searched my soul
through my own
emerald eyes
I have been yours
from the moment
of that first
electric touch
as your hand
grazed mine
across the white
stiffly starched
table cloth
I have been yours
from the moment I saw
the slow smile break out
and spread generously
across your boyish face
I have been yours
from the moment
I first heard
your gentle laughter
but I have truly been yours
unconditionally
irrevocably
from that first deep kiss
those first soft caresses
when you held me tenderly
in your warm embrace
as I sighed
in my room
in the days after
the night
I almost died
