The Tree Line
by Judith Skillman
No clearer boundary to sustain
the twisted wood of krummholz.
No better marriage
between the cold shade
and the south face. Seen from a distance
the line holds two worlds apart.
Closer in, decimation, the edge effect—
a boundary between alpine
and sub-alpine wreak havoc
with the under story.
Like a long marriage
into which sub-text intrudes—
trees stunted, misshapen.
But who will draw the straw
that says one-sided tree?
