Left Behind
by Gail Goepfert

All that is left
a stump
where once my ash tree stood
just beyond my window

Gone
its shade
a verdant secret maze

Gone
its fire
autumn-lit from within

Gone
its stature
standing against the callousness of winter

Cut down in its prime
limbs and leaves
scissored away
a stump
all that is left

Grief for a tree gone
stirs grief
for a mother
buried--body without soul

Gone
the shade that greened my spirit

Gone
the fire that warmed her space

Gone
the stature
mighty as the ash

Grief still sits
where she once perched
