There Was a Time
By Sharmagne Leland-St. John

There was a time
When I could play you by heart
You were like words on water
Then you wore yourself thin
And disappeared.
Now you are indecipherable
Even if I read between the lines
So I strum the sinew of you
In the dark
And wonder at the meaning of you
In my life.
There was a time
When I could play you backwards
A time when I couldn’t sleep
Without  you beside me.
Now I languorously stretch
In this cavernous empty nest
And wander  through my dreams
Of emptiness.
