It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Sylbert,
husband of our editor-in-chief, Sharmagne, on March 23, 2002.

Richard Sylbert was a noted production designer who helped influence a generation of filmmakers.  He received multiple Academy Award nominations during his 40+years career in the film industry and won twice; one in 1966 for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" and again in 1990 for "Dick Tracy."   In addition to being a production designer, Richard replaced Robert Evans as vice president in charge of production at Paramount in 1975 -- the only time a production designer became head of production at a major studio.  He left that executive post in 1978 and in 1981 garnered yet another Oscar nomination for his art direction in "Reds".  Richard's most recent film contribution was for "24 Hours" in 2001.

In addition to the above achievements, Richard was the proud recipient of the following:

BAFTA award (two nominations)
Emmy nomination for the permanent set of "Cheers"
Honourary Doctorate (Ph.D.) American Film Institute
Lifetime Achievement Award - Art Director's Guild
Lifetime Achievement Award - U.S.A. Film Festival

Please join us in extending heart-felt condolences to Sharmagne and their daughter, Daisy, for the loss of this exceptionally talented man, husband and father.
